When publishing content with guest performers, getting your compliance documents is a necessary, but sometimes tricky process. This short guide will tell you about the types of signatures that, whether obtained digitally or physically, will render your model release/consent form fit for approval.
Here are the types of signature that are accepted:
Manual signature - if your contract/release was printed out and signed manually by the performer, this is a valid signature that will always be approved; the only thing you might need to make sure of is for the signature to match the one in the performer’s ID you provide along with the contract. If the participant’s signature has changed since and there is a mismatch between the ID and release now, it is best to obtain a newer version of their documents where both signatures match.
Digital hand signature - if you are obtaining your release or consent form over the internet, the performer can simply add their signature over the document by hand in any editor software. If matching their ID, such signature will be considered valid.
Validated e-signature - this signature will usually look like simple text with the performer’s legal name (e.g. “C. J. Smith”), that, upon clicking/hovering the cursor over it will show a validation checkmark or message, proving it is valid. These signatures are usually obtained through specialised software such as Adobe Acrobal, Microsoft SignTool and others. Important note: text with performer’s legal name that does not show the validation mark upon interaction is sadly not valid.
